Same-day flight change and standby rules by airline (2026)

Traveling Deal is an independent travel agency, not an airline. We can change only tickets we issued; for a ticket bought from an airline or another website, use that seller.

Quick answer

  • Standby for an earlier flight is free at United, Delta and American, and free on Southwest Choice fares and above.
  • A confirmed same-day change costs $75 at Delta for most travelers; United and American may charge a fare or price difference; Southwest Choice fares change free.
  • Basic fares are the big exclusion: Delta Basic gets neither option and Southwest Basic doesn't include them.
  • Every airline keeps you on the same origin and destination for a same-day move.

Confirmed change or standby: which to pick

A confirmed change guarantees the seat; standby doesn't. If you must arrive by a certain time, a confirmed change is worth paying for where it is offered. If you are simply hoping to get home earlier, standby costs nothing at the big four and your original seat stays yours until you clear.

Delta only lets you stand by when a confirmed change isn't available, and American suggests standby when same-day change is sold out. In both cases you can check the app first: if the confirmed option shows a seat, that is the safer move.

United

United's same-day change keeps your departure and arrival airports and moves you to a United or United Express flight leaving within 24 hours before or after your original one. Premier members may get it free; everyone else may pay a price difference, even when the same cabin is available.

Standby is free to join in My Trips (View flight options), at a kiosk or at the counter. Seats are handed out about 30 minutes before a domestic departure and 60 minutes before an international one. Priority goes by Premier status, then cabin, certain United cardmembers and corporate customers, then the time you asked.

Delta

Same-Day Confirmed and Same-Day Standby open 24 hours before your original departure and only move you earlier on the same calendar day. Confirmed costs $75 for general SkyMiles members, Silver Medallions and non-members; it is free for Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallions and for Extra and refundable tickets. Main tickets need a seat in the same fare class.

Both are for Delta and Delta Connection flights only. Confirmed covers the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; standby covers the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Neither allows a different origin or destination, a co-terminal airport such as LaGuardia to JFK, or a switch from a connection to a nonstop. Delta Basic is excluded from both, and paid seats or upgrades don't carry over.

American

American's same-day flight change confirms a seat on a different American flight on your day of departure, where eligible seats are available. It covers trips within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and the Caribbean, plus New York JFK to London Heathrow. The new flight must have the same airports and can be confirmed only within 24 hours of its departure.

Same-day standby is free for every customer, for an earlier American flight on the same route that day, but it doesn't guarantee a seat. Several AAdvantage elite tiers, oneworld Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby members and military fares get confirmed changes free; American notes this excludes Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026.

Southwest

On Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra fares, same-day change and same-day standby are free; you pay only government taxes and fees, which are refunded if they don't apply. Basic fares don't include it.

Southwest's deadlines are strict. Change or list yourself at least 10 minutes before your original flight, or the no-show policy applies. In the app or on mobile web, do it at least 60 minutes before a new domestic flight or 90 minutes before an international one. Your original seat and boarding group aren't guaranteed on the new flight.

Don't forget your checked bag

Moving flights on the day doesn't always move your bag with you. United specifically tells travelers to confirm with an agent about an hour before the new flight that the bag is on board. When you use standby or a same-day change with a checked bag, ask at the counter or gate.

Plans changed and a new ticket makes more sense? A Traveling Deal agent can price a new flight on any major airline and tell you the total before you pay.
